The forum as a source of feedback?

I just wondered what peoples views were on using the forum as a way of generating feedback for an idea or new venture? It seems some are sceptical about this as they view it as trying to get free advertising but it is hard to get an honest opinion from any other source.
Any thoughts?

I think any discussion should be welcomed. But, people will get narked if instead of feedback the person is just shamelessly advertising.

If you look back through some of the pages of the forums it's more like a 'suppliers classifieds' over a discussion forum.

The forum should be the ideal place to float ideas for debate amongst industry professionals.

I do agree with Andy's point (above) that shameless advertising is to be avoided however, theoretically, the forum would be self regulating with any shameless adverts being ignored and any genuine interesting discussion points attracting peoples attention and stimulating some debate.

Personally I'd like to see the forum return to it's previous levels of activity and the more interesting discussions there are would only encourage people to paticipate and debate.

So what's the idea Sales Man?
