Not in the UK - for now, but in the US where the largest US wholesaler, United Stationers has acquired the $90m turnover Action Emco, a regional wholesaler in a region that United already has covered - so this was not about logistics, but acquiring turnover and volume (they already supply many of the customers). In doing so they are going to have to consider how they rationalise the operation, taking out excess logistics capacity. It seems as though wholesalers are in an acquisitive mode as they seek to continue to grow. Any lessons for the UK? Well you can make your own mind up, but what works there, usually works here!
